Best Horror Movies 2013

Updated on September 28, 2014

Top 10 Horror Movies 2013

The best horror movies in 2013 were really scary! There were some completely new movies and there were some really good remakes of classics.

Some of these 2013 horror movies were exceptionally frightening and had me cowering under the bed for a month with the light on 24/7. Others were less terrifying but still make me scared for the cast, because of the suspense built up until the whatever jumped out from around the blind corner!

Here is a list of what was new in 2013 along with details of the plot, the cast and how good these new horror movies were. You can also take part in the poll and let others know which frightening movies you liked most.

2013 Horror Movies

Listed in order of release

Texas Chainsaw 3D

Original Air Date: January 4th 2013

Now available on DVD as shown by the picture on the right.

Starring: Tania Raymonds, Alexandria Daddatrio and Sue Rock

Plot: If you like your films to be really scary, so scary that you'll never want to go to a strangers house again, then you'll love the Texas Chainsaw 3D.

For the third installment in the series, it picks up at the end of the previous film. The owner of the house has died and her relative comes with a bunch of her friends to stay in the house she has inherited. In the beginning everything seems amazing and that these young people have stumbled into some good fortune.

The main character's deceased relative has a large house with lots of cool hidden areas. When they discover a secret chamber things start to go awry. The legend of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre starts once again and these youths suddenly find themselves trying to survive against a chainsaw wielding villain. Will any of them survive?

You'll have to watch the movie to find that out. In the meantime, check out the trailer below to see how scary this film really is. I vote this to the top of my 2013 scary movies. Even the trailer had me hiding under my computer desk!

Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters

Original Air Date: January 25th 2013

Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters DVD now available by clicking on the image to the right.

Starring: Gemma Arterton, Jeremy Renner, Peter Stormare and Famke Janssen

Plot: Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters is a modern adaptation of what happened to Hansel and Gretel if they'd survived their encounter with the witch. Now this sister and brother duo are all grown up and have traveled the world killing witches as they go. However, now they may have bitten off more than they could chew.

This is Hansel and Gretel with the Van Helsing movie treatment. The witches are creepy, as are the other supernatural creatures but the heroes are super sexy and have awesome leather outfits and cool weapons. However, it's not the scariest movie on the list as it's been given the Hollywood treatment. But it does have some interesting twists and turns and we do find out that there are lots of different types of witch.

Warm Bodies

Original Air Date: February 1st 2013

Get more details by clicking on the image of the DVD on the right.

Starring: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer and John Malkovich

Plot: Warm Bodies is a movie that fits into lots of categories. Not only can it be classed as horror but also as sci-fi or fantasy. It can also be classified as comedy and a romance. That being said, I am adding it to the 2013 horror movies list as it is about zombies. Ok some of the zombies aren't that scary but the Bonies are totally scary. They are like the acid blooded aliens from Alien to me.

So what's Warm Bodies about? It's about a zombie guy called R. He can't remember his name or much else. He feels bad having to eat people but has no choice but to survive. That all changes when he meets a hot chick called Julie. Suddenly his heart starts beating and he realizes he has to help her escape from the other zombies.

However, R and Julie have started something which will affect the whole world. They have upset the status quo and no-one knows what this means or what to do. No-one struggles more with this than Julie's dad, who is a gun slinging zombie killer.

I loved this movie and found it really funny, as well as scary in parts.

Based on the Novel

I read the book when I saw the trailer for this movie coming out. I am so glad I did because it was just as funny as the movie.

Warm Bodies is rated PG-13 so it's not as scary as the other horror movies on this list.

Stoker

Original Air Date: March 1st 2013

Starring: Nicole Kidman, Mia Wasikowska and Matthew Goode

Plot: A psychological thriller that is creepy and strange at times. Strange events begin when teenager India's father dies. She meets a man called Uncle Charlie for the first time, after her father's death. He moves in with her mother and her and she finds herself being drawn to him. However, she finds him strange and she wonders why he's really there.

India's mother is unstable and doesn't always make the best decisions. India is coming to an age where her innocence will be left behind and will have some hard decisions to make.

For those that thought Stoker had to do with vampires, I'm sorry to say it doesn't. Instead it's about a family called Stoker. And Uncle Charlie seems to be the one stoking the fire shall we say.

Evil Dead

Original Air Date: April 12th 2013

Starring: Jane Levy, Shilioh Fernandez and Jessica Lucas

You can now watch this super scary movie at home.

Plot: Evil Dead is a remake of the 1981 cult horror movie of the same name. This time the movie will be of a darker nature with better acting and is really scary. I just watched the trailer and I have to admit to not wanting to put the lights out when I go to bed. This is definitely not for the faint hearted. I think this will be the scariest movie of 2013

The Evil Dead is about a girl that takes her friends out to a cabin. There are strange and weird things in the basement. There's a book with special instructions scribbled on it, mainly not to speak the words written in the book. Of course, one of the idiots tries to read the book and pronounces the word out loud. When deaths begin and strange things happen he realizes he's woken something dark that should have been left buried and in silence.

The trailer for Evil Dead is red banded meaning it's of a very scary and violent nature. The Evil Dead trailer is available to watch on YouTube.

The Conjuring

Original Air date: July 19th 2013

Starring: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson and Mackenzie Foy

Plot: A supernatural thriller involving ghosts and spirits. That's what happens when you move into a New England farmhouse. Will people ever learn?

This movie takes hide and seek to a whole new level where even the trailer made me jump and want to put the lights on.

I seriously needed a night light after watching the trailer. The movie is even better than the trailer and was really scary. It's not really the scenes that are scary, but more the suspense that is built up and then clap and the danger is right there!

This is also a movie where people will scream out loud with shock and surprise at some of the scenes.

Now available on DVD. Please click the image on the right for more details.

The Conjuring Trailer

I've got to mention this is one of the scariest trailers I have seen in a while. Although you don't actually see anything that scary, the suspense and the creep factor is very high. I jumped out of my skin at the end of the trailer and even watched parts of it through my fingers. I found it seriously disturbing.

If you like the trailer, you'll love the movie too!

If the trailer is too scary for you, then I suggest you skip this movie as you'll be jumping at shadows for weeks after watching it.

I, Frankenstein

Original Air date: September 13th 2013

Starring: Aaron Eckhart, Yvonne Strahovski and Bill Nighy

Plot: I, Frankenstein is based on the comic which bears the same name. It's a modern day take of the Frankenstein tale, just like Underworld was a modern day version of vampires.

Although it was originally due to air in cinema's in February 2013 it was pushed back to September 2013.

Check back for more information as we get closer to the time.

Carrie

Original Air Date: October 18th 2013

Starring: Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore

Plot: Another movie adaptation of the 1974 Stephen King novel of the same name. For those that don't know the story, it's a supernatural horror movie based on the actions of one little girl. Carrie White is an awkward teenager and is picked on constantly. When a high school prank goes too far, Carrie uses her telekinesis to exact her own special brand of revenge.

If you hate mean girls and high school bullying, then you might just love Carrie.

I think the poster looks a bit like the Scary movie type posters, but don't let that fool you. Carrie may be in high school but her powers aren't reflective of that in any way.

Have You Read Carrie by Stephen King?

Steven King did an amazing job with this book about a girl that loses it and decides to get her own back on all the bullies.
